Club Meeting: Libraries for Kids International

Laura Winkel is the CEO of Libraries for Kids International, a nonprofit organization headquartered in the Lowcountry, dedicated to advancing children's literacy and fostering community engagement across the globe.

 

Originally from southern New Jersey, Laura attended a private Christian school and later earned her bachelor’s degree in Leadership Development and Public Communications from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

 

Her entrepreneurial journey began at just 10 years old, working in her uncle’s orchid business. She later gained experience in sales and embroidery with a local company, while also serving as a nanny to the owners’ children. In 2008, Laura pivoted into public service by attending the police academy, launching a distinguished 12-year career in law enforcement in New Jersey.

 

During her tenure, Laura served in both uniformed patrol and undercover operations, contributing to investigations at the local, state, and federal levels, including collaborative work with the FBI. Her law enforcement career was marked by dedication, resilience, and impact—until a motor vehicle accident in 2018 led to the end of her career.

 

After recovering, Laura relocated to Bluffton, South Carolina, in 2020, where she worked in the financial sector before transitioning into online business development and coaching. She moved to Beaufort in 2021 and began volunteering extensively with Libraries for Kids, ultimately accepting the CEO role in August 2024.

 

Under her leadership, Libraries for Kids has expanded its reach and impact, promoting literacy for millions of children worldwide. Laura continues to manage both her nonprofit and business ventures, while enjoying life with her dogs and pursuing passions such as travel, cooking, reading, and volunteerism.

 

With expertise in leadership development, nonprofit management, community outreach, and digital entrepreneurship, Laura lives by the philosophy:
